BBC Alba: Champion of Gaelic Culture
BBC Alba is immense in terms of windows and a vehicle for the Gaelic language and culture. Being the only dedicated Gaelic language channel in Scotland, it holds a huge responsibility to preserve and present this very central aspect of Scottish heritage. News, current affairs, entertainment, drama—all in the Gaelic language. Though small in audience, what the BBC Alba has done for the revitalization of the Gaelic language cannot be understated. It has made a difference by opening up a niche space to Gaelic speakers and learners, opening up an important part of Scotland’s cultural landscape.
That said, it has gone through times of testing with limited resources and a small audience. Still, BBC Alba goes on serving the Gaelic-speaking community and continues to introduce the language to new speakers.
